Genital Herpes Test Kit
Order Home Genital Herpes Test Kits Online
Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection which is passed on through sexual intercourse. It can be a painful condition that may need treatment. If you are unsure of the cause of your symptoms it’s important to get tested, either when you have signs or symptoms of the virus, or you have had unprotected sex with someone you know has the infection.
To carry out the home test follow these steps:
Place an order and get your kit delivered to your door (delivery is free)
Collect your sample by following the instructions in the test kit
Send your samples to our UK-based, accredited partner laboratory (postage is free)
Once your results are available (in 2 to 3 days), our doctors will review your results
One of our doctors will contact you, via a secure and confidential message in your patient account, to let you know your results and give you advice and support on what to do next
In some cases, the doctor may need to ask for more information. They may contact you by phone, so make sure your telephone number is up to date in your online account.
Due to a national increase in coronavirus testing, our test lab partners are experiencing delays of up to 3-4 days when delivering results from other test kits. We ask for your patience and compassion during these unprecedented times, and we're deeply grateful for your continued understanding.
The genital herpes home test kit conveniently allows you to detect genital herpes without the need to visit your doctor or a sexual health clinic.
The test is carried out by rubbing the swab on any of the sores or blisters you have in the anal or genital region. The most accurate result can be obtained if the swab is used directly on an open sore or blister, this may mean you have to break a blister to obtain some of the fluid. You can ensure you get the most accurate result by following the instruction leaflet provided with the test kit.
Ordering a test kit from Alpha XR Online Doctor is easy – just follow these simple steps:
Fill out a short online questionnaire
Place your order
Your order can then be posted to your preferred address or you can collect it from a local Alpha XR store instead
Carry out the test according to the instruction leaflet provided
Send your sample to the laboratory
Wait for your results to appear in your account – normally 2 to 3 days after the lab receives your sample
The genital herpes home test kit tests for both HSV-1 and HSV-2. Genital herpes can be caused by both herpes simplex virus 1 and herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2).
HSV-1 is mostly spread through oral to oral contact causing cold sores or oral herpes. However, it can also cause genital herpes, specifically through oral to genital contact, for example via. oral sex. HSV-2,can be spread through vaginal, anal, and oral sex.
Have pain and discharge from the vagina or from where you pass urine.Have been told that you have herpes, but this hasn’t been confirmed with a test
It’s possible to be carrying HSV-1 or HSV-2 and not experience any symptoms. However this test will only detect these if you have symptoms present.
As a general rule, you don’t need to get tested if you have never had any symptoms. Although the majority of people who carry the virus don’t have any symptoms, testing is only recommended in people who have symptoms.
There is no cure for herpes, and treatment is only useful to people who suffer from outbreaks. Because of this, knowing that you have the virus won’t be very helpful to you unless you have visible symptoms.
However, if you have sores or any other genital herpes symptoms it is important that you get tested so you can get a diagnosis. Getting diagnosed means that you can get an antiviral treatment to help with the symptoms, or identify whether they are caused by a different infection.
These are antiviral medications which are used to treat acute outbreaks of genital herpes, or prevent future outbreaks of genital herpes symptoms. You should avoid all sexual intercourse until the infection has cleared up, which is usually a week after the symptoms have gone. You should also avoid sex if you feel an outbreak is coming. If you do have sex, you need to use a barrier contraceptive, like a condom, to reduce the chance of infecting your partner.
There are some steps you can take to relieve some of the discomfort associated with the infection, including:
Applying a local anaesthetic cream such as lidocaine to relieve the pain
Applying petroleum jelly, although you should be aware that oil-based products can damage latex condoms, diaphragms, or caps
Applying an ice pack to the area. Never apply ice directly to the skin. Instead, place some ice cubes in a plastic bag, wrap them in a clean towel and hold on the sores for around an hour
Taking cool showers to soothe the sores
Avoiding washing too often and gently dab the affected area when drying
Wearing loose fitting clothing
Drinking plenty of fluids to avoid dehydrating, especially when receiving treatment
If you receive a negative result this suggests that the symptoms that you’re having are less likely to be due to the genital herpes virus. However, it’s important to remember that the test can only pick up the virus if you have symptoms at the time and it’s less accurate if sores have already started to heal and dry up.
You should consider being retested if you notice any symptoms in the future. You should also see your GP or sexual health clinic so that they can examine you and find out what else could be causing your symptoms.
You should practice safe sex to prevent STIs like genital herpes. The best way to prevent STIs is to use a condom every time you have vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Other methods of contraception like the pill don’t protect against STIs, they only prevent pregnancy.
